If you defeat someone, you win. When you lose a competition or do not succeed in doing something, it is a defeat.

 

a) England defeated Italy 2-0.

We say that you play a game against an opponent, or that you play against an opponent.

 

c) France played well against Brazil but lost.

 

If you win against a team or an opponent, you beat them. You can beat someone in a game, a competition, an election, or a battle.

To get a point in a game or a sport you need to score. The score is the number of points earned in a game or a test.
