Zero & First Conditionals

The 4 conditionals in the English language can be divided into two categories. The real and the unreal.

The real (the zero and first) conditionals are about real, possible or likely things.

The unreal (the second and third) conditionals are about unreal, impossible or unlikely things.

The zero conditional is about facts. We use the present simple + present simple to show this.

a) When you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.

b) If you drink 100 % alcohol, you die.

The first conditional is about the present and possibly the future. We use the present simple + will + bare infinitive

c) If I go to Brazil, I will see you there.

d) If I finish work early today, I will call you, and maybe we can go out. But if I work late tonight, you won’t hear from me.

The use of ‘will’ here is not the future form, it is the modal verb of absolute certainty.

Using the present tense in the first conditional shows that the idea is likely to happen, or that it is possible to happen.
